Black Distressed Furniture

My husband and I inherited an old bedroom set when we first got married. It had gotten to the point where we'd looked at purchasing a new set to give our bedroom more of an updated feel and what we found out quickly while looking around is that a lot of furniture is not made to meet the same standards that were met 20 and 30 years ago.

We realized that the set we had was a great quality and had more life left in it than the ones that we were looking at buying brand new! That's when we started thinking about refinishing our furniture and trying to figure out if it was something that we were even talented enough to do....Guess what, IT WAS! It was SUPER easy and cost us just $22 to redo the entire bedroom set! We're SO satisfied and feel like we've got a brand new set!

As you can see, we decided to go ahead and paint the room while we had all of the furniture out of the room. Here's the steps on how we did it:

What You'll Need:
  •  Liquid Sander
  • Old Dish Towel
  • Sanding Pad
  • Black Satin Spray Paint (We used Rustoleum)
We used two coats of the liquid sander, allowing it to dry around 10 minutes between each coat. Once the coats were dried, we went around the entire piece of furniture and lightly rubbed the sanding pad around. Next, we began to spray paint (standing far enough away to do our best to prevent running). If you do have a few runs you can simply blot them lightly with a paper towel. We finished by adding a second coat to be sure that no original coloring would show through. Once the coats were completely dried, we around the edges and lightly sanded to give it that distressed look! It was that EASY!!!

Here's some more pictures to give you a better idea of the "Before" and "After":

  1. This is awesome! My husband and I were in the same boat you were! Inherited light colored bed room suite wanting something more modern...I love this! I've looked around several places, and this seems like the easiest way to do it that i've seen!! How long did it take you to do all of it? Thanks! And it all looks great! :)
